Presidential candidates: Where they stand

Harry Browne

Harry Browne: Libertarian

Education -- He is a strong supporter of separation of school, church and state. He wants to get the government out of schools and strongly opposes school prayer.

Abortion -- He said he believes abortion is wrong, but does not agree with government having a role in it.

Capital punishment -- Browne is against the death penalty.

Taxes -- He supports a 10 percent flat tax rate and a 5 percent sales tax if income tax is eliminated.

Drugs -- He wants to end the War on Drugs and pardon all non-violent drug crimes. Browne supports the medicinal use of marijuana.

Immigration -- Browne said he believes immigrants do not take jobs away from Americans and wants to ease immigration laws. He does not support English-only initiatives.

Campaign reform -- Wants to remove campaign spending limits and donation limits.

Health care -- He said government should have no role in health care.

Pat Buchanan

Pat Buchanan: Reform

Education -- He wants to eliminate the Department of Education and allow school prayer. He is against national testing, bilingual education and multicultural curriculum.

Abortion -- Buchanan is pro-life. He wants to eliminate Planned Parenthood and give constitutional rights to fetuses.

Capital punishment -- Pro-death penalty.

Taxes -- In favor of a 16 percent flat income tax rate. Supports tax breaks on inheritances and small businesses.

Drugs -- He wants to keep marijuana illegal and crack down on drug trafficking from Mexico.

Immigration -- Wants to limit immigration by allowing 250,000 in a year. He wants to tighten boarders and make English the country's official language.

Campaign reform -- Wants to limit PAC money for campaigns and ban soft money.

Health care -- Wants self-financed Medicare and is against a national health system and euthanasia.

George W. Bush: Republican

Education -- Supports local and state government control of education, standardized testing and school vouchers. He also wants schools to teach morals and values.

Abortion -- Bush is against abortion but would make exceptions in cases of rape and incest.

Capital punishment -- Bush is pro-death penalty.

Taxes -- He wants to eliminate the death tax and give more tax credits for people with children.

Drugs -- He wants $2.8 billion for the War on Drugs. Bush also wants to enforce stronger penalties for cocaine possession.

Immigration -- He wants the INS to become more immigrant friendly by posting border guards to compassionately turn Mexicans away.

Campaign reform -- He wants to ban soft money and campaign donations provided by unions. He is also opposed to spending limitations and supports full disclosure.

Health care -- He is opposed to a national health care plan and is in favor of more multi-state HMO's.

Al Gore

Al Gore: Democrat

Education -- Increase funding for teacher development and give bonuses for those who change careers to be teachers.

Abortion -- Pro-choice.

Capital punishment -- Pro-death penalty.

Taxes -- Wants to give tax credits for married couples and the disabled. He also supports tax deductions for school construction.

Drugs -- Wants to loosen restrictions on the medicinal use of marijuana and supports mandatory testing for parolees.

Immigration -- Believes immigration is positive and leads to positive views on cultural diversity and tolerance. He also opposes English-only programs.

Campaign reform -- Supports a soft money ban and the full disclosure of all donors.

Health care -- Wants to spend $30 billion over 10 years to help families who care for their elderly relatives. He also opposes Medical Savings Accounts.

Ralph Nader

Ralph Nader: Green

Education -- Supports raising teacher salaries and wants to implement civic education. He is also against standardized testing.

Abortion -- Pro-choice.

Capital punishment -- Opposes the death penalty.

Taxes -- Believes those who earn more money should pay more taxes.

Drugs -- Wants to legalize marijuana and make rehabilitation instead of imprisonment mandatory for drug offenders.

Immigration -- Opposed to open boarders, but he said he does not believe illegal immigrants should be considered criminals and does not see immigration as a social ill.

Campaign reform -- Opposed to soft money, PAC contributions and private money in public campaigns.

Health care -- Supports health care for birth-to-death health care for everyone and universal health care. He is opposed to tobacco companies and assisted suicides.
