District candidates to speak on campus

By Jina Tedmori
Daily Forty-Niner

Students have a chance to hear what candidates running for the 38th Congressional District and the 54th Assembly District have to say at a free forum held in the University Telecommunications Center today.

"Each candidate will have a minute to respond," said Norma Mayfield of the forum planning committee. "The reason this forum differs from a debate is the candidates will not be addressing each other, they will be only responding to the questions."

Three of the candidates have affiliations with Cal State Long Beach. Steve Horn was president of CSULB for 17 years, from 1970 to 1988. Alan Lowenthal is a psychology professor on a leave of absence and Gerrie Schipske is currently a part-time Public Affairs lecturer.

Candidates running for the 38th Congressional District, which includes Long Beach, are Steve Horn, R-Long Beach, Gerrie Schipske, D-Long Beach, Karen Blasdell-Wilkinson, Natural Law, Jack Neglia, Libertarian.

Candidates running for the 54th State Assembly District are Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, Rudy Svorinich Jr., R-Long Beach, and Dale F. Ogden, Libertarian.

"We are having a problem within the congressional district, because Congress is still in session. Horn may be unable to attend. His son has been substituting," Mayfield said.

The moderator for the forum is Erroll Parker, producer and host of "Inside Long Beach" on Channel 3. The forum will also air on the channel.

"The moderator will identify an issue, ask the candidates their stand point on it, and after there will be written questions from the audience," Mayfield said

"We decided to hold this forum at Cal State Long Beach because there is excellent media equipment for taping and the facility is a good size," Mayfield said.

The American Association of University Women, political science department and League of Women Voters in the Long Beach Area are sponsoring the event.
