Now is the time to polish that resume and shine those
shoes. The fall Job Fair 2000, sponsored by the Career
Development Center, is on campus today and 170 employers
are looking for students of all levels and all majors
to fill a variety of positions.
Students
looking for part-time or full-time jobs and internships
will find a wealth of companies in the University
Students Union Multi-purpose Room from 2 to 6 p.m.
There are
a few differences at the fair this year designed to
help students find jobs easily, said Hal Schaffer,
coordinator of the on-campus interview program.
"It's
indoors, so students have to come there with intent,"
Schaffer said. "They have to go out of their
way, but students will be more aware of it."
Three comprehensive
lists at the front of the fair will be divided into
technical jobs, engineering, science, math; non-technical,
all other schools and majors; and accounting. Students
will be able to look up their major for the types
and number of jobs available to them. They then can
go directly to the companies that interest them, Schaffer
said.
There are
5,000 full-time jobs, 1,200 part-time jobs and 1,500
internships available, which should be encouraging
to students, Schaffer said. Of these jobs, 2,500 are
technical, 6,000 are non-technical and 200 are accounting-related.
Schaffer
expects 1,500 to 2,000 students will attend the fair.
"The
unemployment rate is down and the demand for qualified
employees is up," Schaffer said. "They are
looking for highly educated students who may be inexperienced,
but they're ready to train."
All students
should bring resumes to the fair, Schaffer said, including
t freshmen and sophomores who can make contacts and
talk to people in their field of interest.
A wide
variety of companies will be in attendance for all
majors, ranging from Walt Disney Imagineering to Los
Angeles Unified School District and Hilton Hotels,
Inc. to Gap Inc. and the Peace Corps.
