Maxson prepares for speech

When Cal State Long Beach President Robert Maxson inherited the University five years ago, the campus population stood at 26,000.

Since then, according to Institutional Research, enrollment has increase steadily to 29,000, making the campus one of the largest CSUs in the system.

However, at the feet of his sixth year and in the dawn of the new millinium, Maxson faces a few problems.

Cal State Long Beach is reaching its ideal enrollment of 30,000 students, Maxson said.

Maxson hopes to address issues, such as enrollment, at his annual convocation speech Aug. 27.

Already, dorms are filled to capacity, according to Maxson and Housing and Residential Life.

Making CSULB the "choice campus," which has long been Maxson’s motto, has filled the University, making some students wonder what Maxson’s solution will be.

"At the [Convocation] speech, I won’t have all the answers,” Maxson said. "The questions will be raised.”

Regulating enrollment is not a simple answer, Maxson said. However, there are possible solution Maxson hopes to discuss, but his speech was not fully developed during the time of the interview.

In past speeches, the issue of enrollment has come up. Last year, Maxson enthused the audience with announcements on the freshmen recruits for the President’s Scholars Program and the dorms exceeding capacity.

BUDGET

Among the 22 CSU campuses, CSULB is one of the leaders technology wise, Maxson said.

However, Maxson said the University needs more money for instructional technology and library resources.

"The professors need up-to-date computers,” Maxson said. "[Also], there is a great need for a better library."

Maxson will talk about finance and other issues in his convocation speech.

"During my time [as president], I hope that, one, I’ve helped make this a place for students where academically talented students want to go to school,” Maxson said. "And, two, I’ve tried very hard to make this a place where talented men and women want to make there careers.”
