Area code overlay outvoted
By Yeoshin Kim
Summer Forty-Niner
A state Senate committee
approved legislation that may put an end to the 310-424 area code controversy.
The 11 member Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee voted
8 to 1 in favor of the Area Code Relief Act, also known as AB818.
The legislation
introduced by Assemblymember Wally Knox of Los Angeles will discontinue
the Public Utilities Commission’s efforts to the proposed 310-424 area
code overlay in the West Los Angeles and South Bay area.
The bill also introduces
a single area code to be developed for fax machines, modems, cellular phones,
pagers, ATM’s and other electronic devices which occupies a phone line.
The amended bill
also carries the fate of the Fernando Valley’s 818 area code overlay controversy
because it puts a ban on any future area code splits.
The legislation
awaits to be heard by the Senate Appropriations Committee. Because the
bill went through many amendments, if approved, it will go to the full
Senate and back to the Assembly before reaching Gov. Gray Davis.
