As apple as 'American Pie'
By Hilary Strickland
Summer Forty-Niner
This summer’s slew
of raunchy movie comedies is not over yet. “American Pie” is lewd, crude
and extremely entertaining.
This film is about
four horny, high school seniors who decide to make a pact to lose their
virginity by prom night.
As graphically sexual
as this movie is, the innocence and inexperience of these 18 year-old virgins
is something older audiences can remember fondly from their own embarrassments.
The release of “American
Pie” in the midst of films like “South Park” and “Austin Powers International
Man of Mystery” is like having an older brother pave the way for his younger
sibling.
Teenage boys have
one thing on their minds and “American Pie” captures this preoccupation
that every sexually-frustrated teenager has.
“American Pie” removes
the veneer and takes a realistic look at the misconceptions and growing
pains of inexperienced youth.
This film focuses
on how four different young men embark upon the task of losing their virginity.
Some older audience
members will feel grateful to have lived through that awkward time once
and only once. Others may have fonder memories as they reminisce on their
high-school days.
The message in this
film is crystal clear; teenage boys and sex are as synonymous as America
and apple pie.
