Long Beach mall to close

The Long Beach mall
will close its doors Aug. 15 for the last time and will be revamped
as something better by the Hopkins Real Estate Group.
“The plans for the
new facility have not been finalized,” said John Loper, senior project
manager for Hopkins Real Estate Group.
“However, we are
looking at all alternatives and will see how the new facility will fit
in with the redevelopment of the downtown area,” he said.
Foreclosure on the
property began several years ago when the previous owner failed to make
loan payments, according to public records. Many tenants have left
the Long Beach Plaza under the previous owner also. Foreclosure of
the property took place June 22 and Hopkins Real Estate Group took charge.
“Long Beach has
a lot of potential for development,” Loper said.
Although the idea
of revamping the 17-year-old monolith may sound good to some, others do
not share the same sentiment.
“We’re all looking
for jobs,” said Ari Neya, an employee of Helen’s Beauty Supply. “I’ve
been here five years and my employer has another store in Westminster.
But that’s just too far.”
Some stores have
already closed and other tenants have signs in their windows announcing
liquidation sales from 20 to 70 percent off the regular prices.
