Intern to start program
By Alicia Salazar

Fjola Larusdottir
is a student intern at Cal State Long Beach Career Center. She plans on
implementing career counseling in the school programs of her native Iceland
to prevent student drop out rates.
“My main goal in
the future with experience in the field is to focus on drop out rates and
assist teenagers with information to make informed decisions about their
future,” Larusdottir said.
“Kids are not aware
of skills and possibilities they have in the job market,” she said.
Larusdottir, who
graduated in June 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in education, and her husband
came to CSULB in August 1997 to earn a master’s degree.
Both of them were
looking into master’s programs in England and Iceland but the schools
did not offer what they wanted. This made them focus on programs
at schools in the United States.
“My husband and
I were accepted into CSULB and they provided us with the most information
about that school so that is why we came to CSULB,” Larusdottir said.
“Once I was here
I looked into school counseling but I wanted to get out of education so
that I would have more options in Iceland with my career,” Larusdottir
said. “I found out about career counseling, read job descriptions
and I realized it was something I wanted to do.”
