  • HIV program shuts down

  • A program, created to provide support to people diagnosed with HIV, will close its doors permanently on June 30.
     
  • June proclaimed gay and lesbian month

  • In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, which was the birth of the modern gay and lesbian civil rights movement, President Bill Clinton issued on June 11 the United States’ first official proclamation recognizing the month of June as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.
     
  • Aid for students

  • Cal State Long Beach financial aid students enrolled in summer session may be receiving a $130 scholarship from the University College and Extension Services.
     
  • STD testing

  • Cal State Long Beach Student Health Center, Long Beach Health Department and Associated Students are working together to put a stop to the spread of HIV and STD’s, said Ingrid Puerta, HIV and STD counselor at the Long Beach Health Department.
     
  • Sale postponed

  • The sale of professor Elena Zagustin’s home has been postponed, said Lt. Gary Tackett, division commander of the West Orange County marshal’s office.

    Hundreds of reggae fans flocked to the second annual “Old School Reggae Summer Jam” last weekend.

  • Long Beach Opera’s presentation of Bartok’s “Duke Bluebeard’s Castle” at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center is an emotional and psychological experience. The one-act opera takes the audience on a mysterious tale of love, isolation and sadness.
     
  • Travolta pleases

  • Sex, lies, videotape and betrayal seem to be the central elements in “The General’s Daughter,” a psycho thriller based on a novel by Nelson DeMille.
     
  • Album has smooth beats

  • MC Eiht returns to the rap world with hard-hitting lyrics and great beats on his new album, “Section 8” (his seventh).

  • Coach renews contract
    Long Beach State baseball head coach Dave Snow has recently been signed to a new five-year contract, said Steve Janisch, director of athletic media relations.
     
  • 49ers place 43rd in Sears Directors' Cup.

  • Long Beach State finished 43rd in the nation out of 300 schools, in the 1998-99 final Sears Cup standings, which was released by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics office.
