Misty May, setter for the 1998 Cal State
Long Beach women’s volleyball championship team, has received the Honda-Broderick
Cup, and been named as Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year.
“I’m proud to be honored with such a great
award,” May said in a press release. “I think it is nice for volleyball
since most of the past winners have been from basketball.”
May has won more awards and titles in her
career than any other collegiate volleyball player.
She was presented with the award on June
14 at the 23rd annual Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year Dinner in Reno,
Nev.
More than 900 NCAA colleges and
a national board of directors participated in the voting.
While with the 49ers, May was a three-time
All-American and was named National Player of the Year by the American
Coaches Association and “Volleyball Magazine” during her junior and senior
year.
Recently, May joined the national volleyball
team which hopes to make Olympic qualification.
“We are awfully proud of Misty,” said Mick
Haley, USA Women’s Volleyball Team head coach. “We are very glad she has
joined the national team and hope the success she has earned continues
to follow her.”
Past winners of the Honda-Broderick cup
have included basketball players Rebecca Lobo and Cheryl Miller, soccer
player Mia Hamm, and track and field star Jackie Joyner.
