Cal State Long Beach's Information Systems Student Association is giving networking on the Internet a whole new meaning.
ISSA members learn to create web pages for themselves, which does not sound like much until one considers that this means their resume are on-line. In essence, the web pages network a student's resume to a vast audience.
Members of ISSA are entitled to free hypertext markup language web page training. The workshops given by ISSA officials teach newcomers the art of using the Internet.
HTML is used to create text for resumes and also allows a user to add graphics. Web pages and resumes can be linked together so that by clicking on one page, a user has access to many more.
"My workshop is provided for those who know nothing about HTML programming," said Vu Pham, president of ISSA.
"I teach from the beginning level to the advanced. Just like every other business on the Internet, a web page is a great marketing tool."
The next training session for ISSA will be held in May. Non-members may join the session for only $5.
Creating a web page with a resume is an easy way for students to market themselves. Not only that, but companies pay good salaries to those with HTML skills.
Many companies now browse the Internet for prospective employees.
According to Chris Hanson, managing consultant for Arthur Andersen LLP, the firm has hired several college students after looking at their resume on the web.
ISSA was established 10 years ago by students majoring in computer science and data processing.
Since then, its focus has broadened to include all students in management information systems.
ISSA is also open to all students with an interest in information systems.
