Two visual communication students in the art department at Cal State Long Beach were granted 1996 National Collegiate Package Design Awards by the National Paper Box Manufacturers Association.
Jennifer Lossner and John Kelly Fitzpatrick continued a winning tradition in the art department of over 20 medals won in the last three decades.
Lossner's winning entry was created in Professor Tor Hovind's packaging class. She placed first in the rigid category, which involves creating and designing a hard box package.
Given a fictitious credit card to name, redesign and package, Lossner received the Gold award and a monetary prize.
Although Lossner graduated last spring and could not be reached for comment, Hovind said he was proud of the excellent job she did resolving problems in a very competitive contest.
"The results are fantastic for our program," Hovind said. "It just reaffirms that (CSULB) is the top graphic design school in the nation."
Fitzpatrick's winning entry was done in Professor Jim Van Eimeren's production class. Given a false name and product, Fitzpatrick designed a folding package which won him the Silver award and a monetary prize.
"It was basically good competition between my peers," Fitzpatrick said. "I am pleased to have had the opportunity to compete among others equally skilled nationwide."
CSULB's visual communications department has garnered eight medal awards in this competition since 1992, placing first and second in folding and third in rigid packaging in 1992; first in folding in 1994; and second in rigid and third in folding in 1995 .
