Cal State Long Beach came alive in the week with the Homecoming Week, the annual celebration of self - past, present and future. Under the title, "Backing' the Beach", the festivities began with a noon jazz festival Monday in the University Student Union's South Plaza.
Proceeds from the barbecue will go toward the President's Scholarship, a scholarship given to students for community involvement.
Thursday was color day on which students turned out in university colors.
"We're trying to get everyone to wear black and gold instead of UCLA sweatshirts," said Laura Dickens, the Associated Student Inc. spirit commissioner, who has worked virtually single-handedly on Homecoming since the end of September, when she was appoint ed.
Dickens said what she has most tried to do is get a massive student participation rate in Homecoming events, not just from Greeks, who in the past have dominated the festivities.
"I really want to turn around the commuter-school image everyone thinks we have," Dickens said.
Events cf the week concluded with a baseball game against Washington on Saturday night.
