Much of the conversation that accompanied the Associated Senate meeting Wednesday afternoon revolved around the reports of each executive officer, highlighted by an in-depth discussion between A.S. Inc. President Carl Kemp and the senators over funds which would raise the monetary level of compensation for the A.S. executives.
Each of the executive, which includes Kemp, the A.S.Inc Treasurer Alvaro Castillo and A.S. Vice President Mike Barrett would get further compensation via scholarships which will provide for tuition if the senate approves the proposal.
The funds derive from a committee, whose discretion is used to allocate these funds to certain organizations around the campus, said Kemp.
Kemp said he couldn't exactly tell where the money for the fund comes from, "but I know the money does not come from either students or the state," he said.
Kemp answered questions from more than half of the senators present and for Kemp the bottom line was that the hours he and other executives work every week, the amount of compensation was "minimal at best," he said.
He calculated the 40-50 hours he puts into his duties and responsibilities every week with his current monetary compensation and it came out to $4.50 an hour, said Kemp. "That's barely over the minimum wage," he said.
The motion was tabled to allow senators a chance to talk to students about the proposed raise and it will be brought up for a vote on Wednesday.
In another event, the senate elected Bridget Brady to head a search committee to find a new Dean of Education.
