The California Faculty Association is a deceitful and self-serving organization . According to an article published on the front page of Monday's Daily Forty-Niner, the CFA is striving to increase student-voter registration. This is to be accomplished through a "non- partisan student-voter registration drive."
However, the rea l focus of the drive is not to increase voter registration. Instead, the real agenda centers on the removal of Republican Governor Pete Wilson, and other right-wing members of the Legislature.
"Non-partisan," as defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictio nary, is any person or thing which is "not influenced by political party spirit or interests." Consuelo Nieto, a professor in the College of Education and CFA member, would hardly be described as non-partisan.
According to Nieto, if Republican Gov . Pete Wilson remains in office, decisions regarding education will not be the top priority and higher education will not matter. Would a non-partisan offer such a strong opinion to new voters?
Logically it can be inferred by these remarks that Ni eto wants Gov. Wilson out of office. Mike Hassul, CFA southern chapter president, agrees with Nieto, effectively issuing an endorsement by the CFA. Therefore, the CFA supports the expulsion of Gov. Wilson from office.
The CFA seeks to remove Gov. Wilson by increasing the voter turnout of college students. They will present their version of the state of the public university system to an already disgruntled student population. They will receive a receptive ear when they talk about budget cutbacks, class cancellations and crowded lecture halls.
They will, however, fail to mention that the CSU system provides a quality education at thousands of dollars less than other institutions. They will also fail to mention that Wilson and the state Le gislature are dealing with ever-tightening budgets, and that decisions are made with the welfare of the entire state in mind, not simply the CSU campuses.
Why doesn't the CFA have the guts to be forthright with their desires to remove Gov. Wilson from office?
The real idea behind the registration drive is so obvious. At least the drive could have been composed intelligently, with the agenda buried beneath "non-partisan get-out- and-vote rhetoric." Or the drive could have been undertaken to re gister only Democrat voters. Regardless, they didn't think we could figure it out.
Maybe the real problem with the CSU system are certain incompetent, empty- headed members of the CFA.
