Two tournaments highlight busy 49er sport weekend

Cal State Long Beach women's volleyball team played in its second tournament this season on Sept. 9 and 10, while three other began their fall campaigns.

The water polo team lost three out of four games this weekend at the Newport Seafest Tournamen t. On Saturday, the team lost to UCLA 13-5 and Pepperdine 11-6. Jeff Rose led the 49ers in scoring with two goals in both games. Rose also scored five goals in a 12-11 win against Navy Sunday. The water polo team lost to the Air Force Academy 10-8 to finish the tournament.

The men's cross country placed seventh at the Titan Invitational, Saturday. Pat Bendzick came in 14th out of 211 runners with a time of 25:45.

CSULB's women's cross country team also participated in the Titan Invitation al, Saturday, coming in fourth place. Cristina Ayuso placed 13th out of 111 with a time of 19:02.

The women's golf team came in 13th place in the Diet Coke- Roadrunner Invitational in New Mexico. Cindy Rendon and Stephanie Donihue tied for 53rd pla ce, both shooting scores of 251 for the three rounds.

Most successful of the CSULB teams last weekend was the women's volleyball team; posting three wins and one loss in the UCSB Tournament. CSULB beat Baylor 15-7,15-5,15-9 with senior outside hit ter Nichelle Burton leading the match with 16 kills. Junior outside hitter Brita Schwerm had 13 kills while senior middle blocker Traci Dahl added 11 kills.

Burton led the ladies to a victory against Oregon State 15-5,15- 6,15-2, leading the way wi th 16 kills and 12 digs.

In the third match of the weekend, CSULB was defeated by Loyola Marymount 7-15,12-15, 8-15. Burton had 11 kills as the 49ers were swept for the first time since 1989.

CSULB came back to beat San Diego State 15-8,1 5-13,15-7 later in the day. Schwerm and Burton had 27 and 26 kills respectively.
