Students living in Cal State Long Beach's residence halls this semester might find their quarters a little less roomy because of a 13 percent increase in dorm enrollment.
By strengthening recruiting efforts and targeting high schools the increase w as expected by university officials. Also, with freshman enrollment going up at CSULB by 10 percent, Gary Little, director of housing and residential life, said the rise in housing figures was not a surprise.
"Our marketing efforts are making a positive impact and things are turning around with Maxson as President," Little said. "He is making (CSULB) a university of first choice, which is welcoming students."
The total count of residents in the 18 halls on campus is currently at 1,441, and is on the rise, he said.
Moving into the residence halls was made easier with new orientation changes. Little explained that students were allowed to move in one day earlier, freshman on Aug. 26, and continuing students Aug. 27 and 28.
Building meetings were held all over campus to orient and help students who had questions. The residence halls still have room for students who are interested, but space is limited.
"Students can move in anytime throughout the semester," Little said. "There is still sp ace available but it is filling up fast."
Little also said students still interested should act fast because the housing office will soon start accepting applications for next semester.
Life in the residence halls also brings excitement. Many functions are planned for the student residents, Little said. Last week they had a casino night, club night was Thursday and in the works are a hypnosis show and a trip to Disneyland.
