Extended Library hours well received

Acting Associate Director of the University Library, Henry DuBois is feeling good about the future of the newly extended library hours.

"We sense a great deal of support," DuBois, said.

"Just to have the Library open this late and to know I could come back and get more information if I need to helps," Jim Colegrove, 28, human resource major, said.

Recreation therapy major, Ana Salicido agreed.

"It's easier to study here than at home," she said.

The Escort Program has extended its operating hours to accommodate the new Library hours.

Those students seeking an escort to their cars or dorms will be able to find an attendant outside of the Library.

Shuttle service has not changed, and will continue to operate until 10:45 p.m.

"I'm glad the escort service is available until midnight, I study four nights a week I study here and near finals I'll stay until they close," Norma Velasquez, 22, liberal studies major, said.

To continue the Library's funding for the extended hours, the issue goes through the Resource Planning Process committee and from there President Robert Maxson will make the final decision this summer to extend the hours for fall 1995.

The $7,500 which was allocated for the remaining weeks from March 19 to the end of the semester went toward Library staff, and a night supervisor.

The library extended its hours 7 and a half hours per week, increasing the total number of weekly hours to 91.75 per week.

"That is way above average for the California State University system," DuBois said.

Some have voiced concern over whether the Library should use funds to increase services in other areas.

James Kelly, the director of the department of Social Work, said many of his students are concerned with the availability of subscriptions.

"I receive letters of complaint from students about the lack of current Library subscriptions," Kelly said.

"There's justification for the increase in the schedule," DuBois said. "The funds for the extended hours could be spent elsewhere such as new Library subscriptions, but the students benefit from the extended Library hours."
