Cal State Long Beach fashion merchandising and design majors, as well as members of Students in Fashion, will present their design projects at a May 11 fashion show, The Art of Fashion.

The students' designs will be judged by professionals in the fashion industry at the show.

Students in Fashion is a campus organization for fashion merchandising and design majors who are interested in pursuing a career in textiles, apparel and the retail industry.

Luann Chow, the organization's president, said by producing the fashion show, the organization hopes to expose its members to all aspects of the fashion world.

Other organization activities include museum trips, hosting guest speakers, holding fund-raisers and attending fashion shows.

Show coordinators Gina Nahamchuk and Cris Suder spend approximately 15 hours a week working on the show, for which they will each receive a grade and class credit.

The Art of Fashion is a 45-minute production that will take place in the University Student Union and will be followed by a catered reception prepared by students enrolled in a food-service preparation, home economics class.

The cost to produce the fashion show is approximately $3,000. Students in Fashion received $1,800 from Associated Students Inc. and earned the remaining balance through fund-raising events.

"It's great, totally professional," Nahamchuk said about the upcoming fashion show.

Nahamchuk said that more than 500 guests are expected to attend the fashion show, and 150 of them will be invited to the catered reception.
