Cal State Long Beach's department of Academic Affairs has passed a resolution to extend the University Library hours on a trial basis, said Alma Salazar A.S. Vice President Monday.

Carl Anatol, head of Academic Affairs approved $7500 to extend Library hours for the spring semester. The Library will be open until midnight Thursday through Sunday for the remainder of this semester.

Salazar said the extended Library hours will greatly assist night students.

The average night student attends classes from 7 to 9:45 p.m., Salazar said, and most night students work during the day. This left many students with only 45 minutes a day in which to utilize Library facilities, Salazar said.

Also, many night students were unable to make use of material not available for checkout due to the previous Library hours.

"This trial extension of hours is through final exams week only," Acting Associate Director Henry DuBois said.

The Library is hiring additional staff for the late shift and is working toward March 19 to begin its new trial hours.

Media Resource Center, the Computer Lab and the Reference Center said DuBois.

The new trial schedule is 7:45 a.m. until midnight Sunday through Thursday. Fridays 7:45 a.m. to 5 :00 p.m. and Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The regularly extended Library hours for final exams begins May 14 through May 25.

Monday through Thursday 7:45 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. Fridays 7:45 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Sundays noon to 1:00 a.m.
