Senator-at-Large Josh Soper was voted-in as Senate Representative to the Board of Controllers Wednesday at the Associated Students Senate meeting.

Soper, Senator for the School of Engineering, was nominated along with Senator Natasha Harris, School of Liberal Arts.

Soper won the Senate vote five votes to three.

The position became vacant after Senator-at-Large Jesus Martinez gave a verbal resignation to Associated Students Inc. Vice President Alma Salazar during the winter semester break.

Salazar said that the voluntary resignation was due to Martinez not being able to keep up with the time commitments that are needed in order to serve on the A.S. Senate.

Soper clarified that he can be there the whole time, and that he wants to make sure that the funding for Cal State Long Beach gets evenly divided.

According to Salazar, Soper may begin his new position as early as Tuesday.

There are two senate representatives needed to serve on the B.O.C. Sergeant at Arms for the A.S. Senate Steven Negley is currently protempore.

Former Senator-at-Large Alfred Perdito also officially steppeddown from the A.S. Senate on Monday when he submitted his written resignation to A.S.I.

Perdito was unavailable for comment, and A.S.I. was unable to comment.

Since Perdito's position was a senator-at-large position, meaning he did not represent any of the university's colleges, any CSULB student may apply to run for the available senate seat for the remainder of the 1994-95 school year.

Students wishing to run must be enrolled in at least six semester units at CSULB, and maintain a 2.0 grade point average.

The deadline to submit an application to run for the senate is Thursday, Feb. 23 at 5:00 p.m., and the senate will decide on the following Wednesday when the election will occur. For more information call (310) 985-5241.
