Dear Forty-Niners, Welcome back to Cal State Long; "The Beach." I am looking ahead to the year with enthusiasm and optimism. Along with the other Associated Student officers, I have worked hard during the summer to provide each student with an opportunity to get involved.
Regardless of what your interests are, the A.S. is ready to work with you. The A.S. is often a complete mystery to students throughout their college years. We hope to change that. We want you to know everything we are doing to improve campus life for you. So please take a moment to become familiar with the A.S. and our accomplishments thus far.
The Associated Students Inc. (A.S.I.) is similar to the student governments we all had in high school. It is the "student government" entity of this university. But ou r A.S.I., as a corporation, gives over $100,000 to organizational programs. There are over 230 student organizations on campus which are A.S.I. recognized. You, as a student here, are eligible to join any of them.
There are many leadership opportun ities available through our commissions and elected offices. A commission is a single purpose committee. We have over twenty-five of them. As a student you may wish to be a member of one which interests you in order to learn how it operates. In the fu ture, you may become the commissioner.
In the spring we have the general A.S. election. Students are elected to positions in A.S. government and to various committees and boards. If you are interested in getting involved, and performing a valuable service, I encourage you to come to the A.S. offices. We are located on the second floor of the University Student Union. I will be happy to explain the system to you and answer any and all questions you might have.
During the summer, the A.S. was successful at securing student discount tickets for all athletic events in the Pyramid. We were also instrumental in the creation of extended hours for services provided in the Administration building. This is quite an accomplishment, but there is sti ll much more to do!
I encourage you to get involved in order to make the most of your college experience. As you look back on your life so far you probably see opportunities you had but did not act on. Please don't make that mistake here. The oppor tunities exist at this university; take advantage of them. Every student pays into the A.S.I. Make sure you get your moneyÕs worth.
This is your chance to get involved, so "jump in with both feet." There's no better place for it than here at "The Beach!"
All the best,
Suzie Aramesh
A.S.I. President
