Monday night hot spots

It's Monday night and you don't feel like studying, the reception on the TV isn't working and your roommate is getting on your nerves. So what do you do?

Watch Monday night football with other students at some of the hottest local pubs. No cover, free pool and free, or very cheap food - a student's dream evening.

Moose McGillycuddy's will feed starving students a free buffet-type dinner during the football game. They also have special guests every Monday, such as the Raiderettes, the Bud Light girls and the Jagermeister girls. Draft beers are $1 and pitc hers are $5.

A disc jockey hands out free T-shirts, cups and other surprises in exchange for correct answers in football trivia. There are 21 televisions set up in every corner of the bar, so people playing pool or video games can also keep track o f the score.

"Mostly local people come here, we (Moose's) get a good, mellow-sized crowd," said manager John Farrell.

The 49er Tavern is another hot-spot. It features a Monday night spaghetti feed, also known as "pasta pig-out," for $4.95. The pig-out lasts from 5 p.m. through the end of the game. Reservations are taken for tables, but are not necessary if you'd prefer sitting at the bar, playing pool, or just standing around watching one of the six screens. Pitchers of Mulson, Micelob dark, Bud, Bud light, Coors light and Miller genuine draft are $4 and schooners are $2.

Bartender Marty Ziegler said he has noticed that since The Tavern is within a mile of campus, "a lot of Long Beach State alumni, students and locals" frequent the bar.

Yankee Doodles is another popular Monday night spot because there's often an open seat in the house right near one of the many televisions. During the game, Miller, Bud and Bud light are offered on tap for $3.50 a pitcher and also available is a large variety of imports and domestics in bottles. Yankee Doodles offers free pool during lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., darts, ping pong and video games throughout the night and 8- ball tournament begins at 8 p.m.

"We have an entertainment license, so all ages can come escorted by their parents," said tournament director Mace Norris.

And right here at Cal State Long Beach, conviently located for students living on campus, is the Nugget. The Nugget has three screens, two pool tables, pizza, soda and plenty of beer. Bud, Miller and Coors beer cost $1.75 for a 12 oz. glass. Samuel Adams, Sierra Nevada and Bass cost a little more, ranging from $2.50 to $2.90. Go out and socialize ... it is Monday night football time once again.
