Presidential campus praise
Dear 49ers,
I hope the third week of your classes is
going well. It sure makes me feel good to see students back on campus.
I want to send my congratulations to the
following academic departments for being listed among the best in the nation.
-
The dance department for being ranked in the
top 10 in the nation for the last three years.
-
The graphic design program for being ranked
in the top 10.
-
The industrial design program, which was ranked
as one of the top seven in the world.
-
The communication studies programs for being
ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 6 nationally.
These are just a few of many Cal State Long
Beach programs that have received regional and national recognition in
recent months by external review agencies and professional organizations.
If you want to see democracy in action,
I would strongly urge you to attend one of the weekly student government
sessions. Go watch Sheryl Mauricio, Associated Students Inc. vice president,
and your senators and commissioners conduct their business in the Associated
Students Senate chambers at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.
With integrity, intelligent planning and
stimulating debate, the commissioners and senators provide thoughtful leadership
to student programs. You will be gratified to see that their
capable administration and commitment ensure all student populations get
a voice in the decision-making process.
Please join me in applauding the energetic
enthusiasm of Dani Dawson and her cheerleading squad. These talented women
make up the best cheer team in the state. You can see them on a regular
basis at CSULB athletic contests.
Speaking of athletics, how about the Long
Beach State womenís volleyball team, which is continuing its undefeated
record.
It was good to see Brian Kennedy, Bobby
Crosby and the other 49er baseball players back on campus, as they open
up their fall practice schedule.
I also encourage you to go out to the
campus pool to catch the 1999 menís water polo squad, which started its
season last week. And womenís soccer is in full swing at George Allen Field.
It's going to be at great semester. Dozens
of campus organizations and the student government have numerous social
and recreational activities planned for all of you.
Through Sept. 18, you can catch a wonderful
play at the Playerís Theatre on campus. Student tickets are still available
for this musical mystery, titled "Who Killed Kaspar Hauser?"
Go Beach!
Robert C. Maxson
President.
