Journalism department has new faces

By Yoko Ito-Peterson

Although most courses and classrooms havenít changed within the journalism department at Cal State Long Beach, some students canít help but notice a difference this semester.

Two instructors, Matthew Cabot and Julio Laboy, have become the newest faculty members to join the CSULB journalism department.

Also making her debut to the university is Leigh Smith, who is the new production manager for the Daily Forty-Niner.   Cabot, who taught at the University of Pacific for two years, feels teaching at CSULB is a dream come true.

During his 13-year career in the public relations field, Cabot wrote variety of news releases and articles for in-house publications. His work on a medical device product for diabetics resulted in receiving a "PRism award" from the Los Angeles chapter of the Public Relations Society of America in 1998.

The courses Cabot will be teaching include Internal Communication and Public Relations, Publications for Public Relations and Public Relations in Case Studies.

"My goal is to be the best teacher I can be and to be a valuable addition to journalism faculty not only as a teacher but as a researcher," he said.

Laboy, who started his professional career in 1991, is an award-winning journalist from New York who was known as the "pizza boy" by his fellow reporters.

This nickname was coined after Laboy went undercover as a pizza delivery boy to gain access to a blocked newspaper company when he was covering a labor dispute issue.

Laboy has worked at various leading newspapers in the nation, such as The Wall Street Journal. By utilizing his conversational Spanish skills, he became a stand-out journalist at the publication, covering immigration issues and international trade in California.

Laboy said his goal at the university is to become an expert of student rights and the rights of the student press. He believes CSULB is rich in diversity.

While completing his masterís degree in communications and journalism, Laboy teaches four classes --ÝFeature Writing, News Reporting, Reporting Public Affairs and Senior Media Production.

Smith, also new to the department, said her interest in language and writing led her to the advertising industry.

Prior to her new position at the Daily Forty-Niner, Smith conducted research on advertising trends and coordinated business presentations for a prominent advertising agency. She also has experience in video production and copy writing.

Smith oversees production at the Daily Forty-Niner, which involves editorial and advertisement layout for the newspaper.

Smith is currently working on her masterís degree at the university while working for the newspaper.
