Hip-Hop radio show bounces

Hip-hop radio has arrived in yet another form at Cal State Long Beach with ìThe B-Side Radio Show.î

"The B-Side Radio Show"  kicks off Monday nights at KBEACH.ORG, a CSULB Internet radio station. The program introduces a fresh line up of disc jockeys mixing new and unreleased music live on the net.

"The B-Side Radio Show" is one of three programs dedicated to hip-hop music and culture, including "In The Park" and "Unorthodox Radio." The show promises never played before tracks from such groups as Jurassic 5 and Dilated Peoples. Matt Chong, Tung Ha and Albert Lao host the two-hour program, which airs at 10 p.m. to midnight every Monday.

"This will be a 100 percent hip hop program focused on music, news and issues," Chong said. The DJs, besides playing rhythmic beats, also update listeners on upcoming news and events such as reviews and concerts.

Of course, a radio show wouldnít be a show without special guests and live appearances.

"We are expecting DJs from all around the country and a lot of industry people on the show this year," Chong said. Guest DJs will demonstrate their mixing abilities while answering questions between performances.

Although the station doesnít have the capacity to take call-ins yet, fans can e-mail the show with questions and comments.

Future plans for the show are indefinite at the moment, but Chong said he tends to take the show to a higher plateau.

"Our goal is to build a strong listener base as well as to market the program to a commercial station," Chong said.

Thatís not surprising as Chong is not a newcomer to the music industry.

Chong in the past co-hosted ìThe Jointî on KBCH, a CSULB cable station and currently works at the popular hip hop station KKBT 92.3 doing promotional work. He said he had heard about the idea for ìThe B-Side Radio Showî and went to the station meetings that led to the showís start in February.
