After Saturdayís University of California
Irvine Invitational, Long Beach State cross-country head coach Andy Sythe
said he was encouraged the individual performances he saw from his runners
-- all three of them.
Monica MacManus was the only runner for
the women's team.
Larry Henderson and Johann Appell represented
the men's team.
Running at Central Park in Huntington
Beach, the womenís team event was won by Arizona State with a team score
of 22 points.
Arizona won the men's event with a score
of 36 points.
The 49ers did not receive any team points
due to the lack of runners participating.
Bree Frigo and Kim Jackson were to have
competed but Sythe said he gave them time off to rest their injuries and
teams must have a minimum of five runners to qualify for team points in
competition.
In the women's race, Tara Chaphin of Arizona
won the event with a time of 17 minutes, 32 seconds.
MacManus finished in 41st place with a
time of 19 minutes, 10 seconds.
Sythe said he was pleased with MacManusís
performance at the end of the race.
"She ran a great second and third mile,"
Sythe said.
Micheil Jones of Arizona won the menís
event, with a time of 24 minutes, 35 seconds.
Henderson finished in 28th place with
a time of 25 minutes, 44 seconds.
Teammate Appell finished in 31st place
with a time of 25 minutes, 55 seconds.
Sythe said he was pleased with the spacing
between Henderson and Appell and with the effort they put in during the
second half of the course.
"Both runners were between 35th and 50th
place in the first two miles and worked there way up from there." Sythe
said.
Sythe also said the runners that did not
participate at UCI had a great workout running the hills in Mission Viejo.
The team's next race will be Saturday
at the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State. |
