Shutting out an unranked team should be
an easy feat for the defending NCAA champions.
The 49ers proved that on Friday night
in a sweep against unranked Northridge (15-2, 15-3, 15-12).
The win brings the 49ers two games
closer to shattering the record for consecutive matches won at 44.
Two upcoming games against No. 1 Pacific
and No. 3 Hawaii has LBSU Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro focused.
"We just have to get better, as quick
as possible," Gimmillaro said.
No. 4 LBSU improved to 6-0 after Friday's
win.
The 49ers came out in true championship
form in the first game, easily scoring eight consecutive points before
giving the Matadors a chance at a sideout.
Northridge scored two points as LBSU briefly
lost its momentum, but sophomore middle blocker Cheryl Weaver helped the
team regain its composure for the win with a powerful kill.
Gimmillaro said he saw improvement in
the 49ers' execution.
"I wish we were further along," Gimmillaro
said. "We almost put things together. It's just not quite there."
Game two, the 49ers then scored 12 points
before the Matadors scored again. The 49ers won the game easily.
CSUN gave the 49ers more of a challenge
in the final game, opening with a sideout and the first point. This game
was more evenly matched as the Matadors managed to tie the score three
times.
Friday's victory over CSU Northridge marked
win No. 400 for Gimmillaro.
"I can remember every one of them,"
he said.
Gimmillaro currently holds the Big West
Conference record for overall victories.
He came into the season with an impressive
.809 winning percentage, the fifth highest in NCAA history. |
