Zero wins and four losses. That is the
current record of the Long Beach State womenís soccer team.
The 49ers suffered another loss Friday
against the Loyola Marymount University Lions 2-1 at George Allen Field.
"No matter what anyone says, we played
with a lot of heart today," said Coach Julie Cochran. "This was a great
match-up for us."
The game started off with the 49ers taking
the lead. But the Lions came back to tie the score with less than three
minutes left in the first half.
The Lions scored the winning goal in the
second half, with a little more than 15 minutes remaining in the game.
The only 49er goal came from freshman
midfielder Sarah Aguilar, who scored her first goal off a rebound of her
own shot within the first 26 minutes of the game. "We're
shooting more, and we're scoring," Cochran said. "Last year, we got blown
out by this team 4-1. This was a great match-up for us."
The 49ers went into the half with panic
and a sense of uncertainty of the outcome of the game. During the half,
Cochran advised the 49ers to relax.
"This is our place," she told the players.
"This is our home. Remember our game and our tempo."
But the 49ers just could not keep the
motivation going. The Lions came back to win the match with less than 16
minutes left in the game.
Lion Jill Dobens scored the game-winning
goal off a right corner pass from Stacy Roberts. That was Dobenís second
goal of the year.
Although the 49ers lost once again, Cochran
is still positive that her team will make it in the Big West.
"We're ranked bottom in the Big West right
now, and it really doesnít concern me," she said. "[A record of] 0-4 doesn't
concern me. We have to continue to work harder and harder."
The 49ers will play away, at Pacific,
on Friday. |
