Big concert, food chains proposed

Associated Students Inc. President Toby Sexton said he was trying to attract more restaurants here and slate Rage Against the Machine for an on-campus concert as he gave his weekly address to the Associated Students Senate on Sept. 8.

At the Senate meeting, Sexton said he was waiting for Rage Against the Machine to respond to his bid for the bandís appearance. After the meeting, Sexton said the band has not responded yet. The band is now on tour in Europe and has fired its managing staff, Sexton said.

Sexton said he has other bands in mind for the concert tentatively scheduled for Nov. 12 at The Pyramid in case Rage Against the Machine does not agree to perform.

Also during his address, Sexton said he knew some restaurants -- such as El Pollo Loco/Fosters Freeze, Taco Surf and Derrickís Chicken -- that wanted to set up in the University Student Union.

Other restaurants interested include Little Caesar's, Green Burrito and Kentucky Fried Chicken, according to Student Union documents.

The Student Unionís board of directors aims to have the restaurants in place by January 2000, Sexton said.

After Sextonís address, senators argued over whether credit card vendors should be allowed on campus.

Sen.-at-large Bill Kessler said credit card companies are only out for themselves and "put too much pressure on students."

Some senators felt the companies should remain on campus.

Sen. Chance Decker for Health and Human Services felt credit cards "help students build their credit history" and should be allowed to kept doing what they do.

Sexton proposed the Senate discuss prohibiting credit card booths from school grounds. If the Senate passes a proposal opposing the companies, the issue will then go to California State Student Association, which is made up of student representatives from each California State University campus.

The association can vote to either endorse or oppose the proposal to show lawmakers the associationís stance on the issue.

Also during the meeting, A.S.I. Administrator Robert Garcia said he wanted to change the campus colors to black and gold.

Currently the schoolís official colors are seal brown and gold. The athletic department uses black and gold as its colors, Garcia said. He hopes a senator will write a proposal on that idea.

Also speaking to the Senate was Tom Bass, senior director of Parking and Transportation Services. He showed a rendition of a sign that could go on the water tower on the Veteran Affairs Hospital property. The sign would read "Go Beach" on the side facing the campus and "VA" on the side facing the hospital.

Cal State Long Beach President Robert Maxson would give $18,000 to pay for the sign.

In its first major vote of the session, the Senate voted, 18-0, to appoint senior Ramiro Cabatbat for administrative aide for internal affairs.

Cabatbat has worked for A.S.I. in the last year and served on one of the councils that reported to the Academic Senate.

"I give and I take,î Cabatbat said. ìThe experience I get from here is priceless, and what I give to A.S.I. is my dedication and time."

Sexton said, "He will serve as my chief liaison with regards to things that occur on campus and in the Union."
