U.S. -World police

The political unrest in the Indonesian province of East Timor may seem a world away. And that will probably remain the case for most Americans.

Despite the threat of civil war in the province, our fearless leader, President William Jefferson Clinton has announced he has no intention of sending American troops to police the area.

Defense Secretary William S. Cohen said, "The United States cannot be, and should not be viewed as, the policeman of the world."

Well six months ago, our nationís leader shoved us into that role. Backed by the United Nations, Clinton launched an air war over the former Yugoslav Republic.

Thatís right. Our president set a precedent by sticking America's big nose into another nationís civil affairs.

Whether you like it or not, the Clinton administration has set us up as the worldwide watchdog.

Cohen's statement, though reflecting growing public sentiment, is pretty flat because of Clintonís previous policing actions through out the world.

Oh well, isn't that what our president is best at -- spin control and the great flip-flop?
