USU reorganization takes place within

Although the University Student Union
may look the same from the outside, there has been a virtual makeover within
its administration.
Since July 1, the Student Union administration
has been reorganizing itself to accommodate its growing needs and demands,
said Eugene Minter, the Student Union director.
"We were operating a facility, a corporation,
as well as we could with the staff that we had," Minter said.
Because of a limited staff in event planning, Minter and Richard Haller,
Associated Student Inc. chief administrative officer, began working on
a new organizational structure last year.
As part of the reorganization, duties
and responsibilities have been reassigned. Sylvana Cicero, who used to
head up programming and marketing for the Student Union is now only responsible
for marketing.
New hire, Precious Robinson, is now in
charge of programming, the division which brings events to the Student
Union. Past events have included last semester’s safe sex forum and the
many concerts held in the South Plaza.
"The process [of reorganization] is coming
along very well," said Robert Lara, the Student Union’s associate director.
"We have a few glitches...but eventually we will work them out."
One goal of the reorganization, Lara said,
will be providing students with more stimulating event programming.
Such programming will focus on increased
cultural and educational topics, said Patrick Wong, program assistant at
the Student Union.
The aim will be to program more educational
programs that will leave an impact on students long after they are gone,
said Wong.
Minter believes the new, possibly interactive,
programming will also encourage more student involvement.
"It is going to give us a wider variety
of programming to offer [students]," he said.
Many students at the Student Union were
unaware of the reorganization.
"I thought the events were good, but if
they are going to bring more events here, then that’s better," said Selene
Partida, a nursing major.
As for the old system of organization,
Lara said it operated fine in the past, but it needed to be updated.
Since the reorganization, two new full-time
administrators have been hired: Steve Larson, assistant director of facilities
planning, and Robinson.
"This [reorganization of the Student Union]
is beneficial to everybody, to students and staff," Minter said. |
