Ohio State next stop for bruins

Last season the UCLA Bruins showed the rest of the NCAA how not to make a national championship run.

Huge victories against Texas, Arizona and Southern Cal were wasted by a 99th-ranked defense and the upset-minded Miami Hurricanes, who embarrassed the Bruins 49-45 to ruin the Bruins’ national title hopes.

But now it’s time for UCLA and, especially, Bob Toledo to move on.  It’s time to forget about Miami, forget about the defense and forget about Cade. Just let it go.  If you’ re Bob Toledo you should only be thinking about one thing: Ohio State.

While not looked at as a serious national title contender this season, the Bruins look like a team headed in the right direction with their dominating victory over Boise State. UCLA looked especially improved on defense where the Bruins only allowed the Broncos one touchdown.

Said Boise State Head Coach Dirk Koetter: "We lost to a good team that played better than we did."

UCLA lost embattled defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti and replaced him with long-time assistant Bob Field.  The key to UCLA’s success this season could be in Field’s hands as the Bruin defense has a lot to prove.

The defense actually looked quite strong in the Bruin's route over Boise State in their home opener Saturday at the Rose Bowl. The defense played well holding the Broncos scoreless until midway through the fourth quarter.

If the defense can hold the Buckeyes’ explosive offense, especially running back Michael Wiley, like Miami did two weeks ago, the Bruins have a shot.

But the Bruins defense still has to improve to beat the Ohio St. The 360 total yards UCLA gave up to the Broncos is way too many to give away to an Top 10 team. The defensive line needs to step up and stop the explosive Buckeye running game and pressure quarterback Steve Bellisari into some bad passes.

In its first game the Bruins' offense looked strong, but a little tentative.

The team's 401 combined yards was promising,  but its four turnovers were not.  These included three interceptions by quarterbacks Cory Paus and Drew Bennett.

To challenge the Buckeyes, the Bruins need a big performance from Paus and Bennett and a good running game. They also need to keep possession of the ball and not give the Buckeyes a chance for any easy scores.

In the end, the winner of the UCLA and Ohio State game will not only have to control the tempo but also their emotions.

The Bruins' football team is notorious for not winning the big games.

Prediction: Ohio State will win by 10 points.
