Porn has problems

While I was enjoying the women's volleyball tournament I read the Forty-Niner. Ironically, there was an editorial opinion by Ken Hanson endorsing the pornography industry.

Hanson's opinion seems to be mainly based upon economics and the behavior of a Los Angeles councilman. Hanson fails to mention a few other circumstances in the industry, such as the exploitation of women, illegal drug use in the industry, or organized crime influences.

As Hanson matures I hope he will see the full picture of an issue and not make his opinions based on the almighty dollar.   Before his next opinion, Hanson should turn off his videocassette recorder, deflate his rubber doll and find the library to research all issues of his editorial.

EDITOR'S RESPONSE

Mr. Morey, thank you for responding to my article "Porn Business is good business.

It is always nice to see that someone takes interest in our campus newspaper, especially when the person does not attend class at Cal State Long Beach.

I hope that after reading this response you will realize that I was not endorsing pornography. I personally have no vested interest in porn. If it is there, I will watch. If it’s not there, I don’t.

The reason I wrote the article in the first place was to call attention to the fact that the Los Angeles City Council and Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan obviously have different views of the role of pornography in the city. When an industry creates between 10,000 and 20,000 jobs for one city, that makes the industry a very powerful force in the community.

As for the exploitation of women, that is what porn is all about. Aren't men and women exploited in adult films?

Anyway, as for basing my defense of the porn industry on economics, what is wrong with that? Isn’t that what drives the majority of Americans? I always thought that was part of the American dream.

Ken Hanson is Opinion editor for the Daily Forty-Niner.
