WPE needs grammar
When the chairman of the WPE Test Development
Committee, Dr. Edward Borowiec, said "grammar has no bearings on one’s
writing proficiency," we were stunned.
If grammar has no bearing on one’s ability
to write, then why is every student in the journalism department required
to take English 320, English grammar?
Are our dear department heads just wasting
our time?
Probably not. Grammar is the backbone
of good writing. How can one clearly and coherently scribe random thoughts
without proper training in language structure?
Why does the committee feel that grammar
is so unimportant? Did it remove the objective grammar section of the test
in order to help students who do not have a firm grasp on English?
Now don't go getting all riled up because
of that last question. It is nothing personal. Most of the time it may
not be your fault. Can we really blame you for not receiving a proper education?
Certainly not!
But if you choose to not learn the grammar
you missed in your early education, should we lower the standards for you?
Again, certainly not!
But the WPE Test Development Committee
didn’t even lower its standards. It just removed the requirement all together.
Why can’t those who failed the objective
portion of the test just take a grammar class and retake that section of
the test?
Well, those of us who use proper grammar
will always have a job cleaning up the writing of those who don’t. And
more importantly, we will always have a good laugh. |
