Coed fraternity mixes business, pleasure

Business strategies and administrative
services are unlikely conversation topics for some members of college fraternities
and sororities at social functions.
But it's different for those belonging
to Delta Sigma Pi, a professional coed business fraternity that specializes
in corporate networking.
The fraternity has nearly 200,000 members
nationwide, according to Thushan Rajapaksa, president of the Cal State
Long Beach chapter.
More than 800 members are students from
CSULB’s College of Business Administration. With such a high membership,
the fraternity is one of the largest organizations on campus, Rajapaksa
said.
"The more members we have, the stronger
we get," he said. "As it stands, we are getting stronger every year."
The CSULB chapter has received awards
in such areas as having the most profitable fund-raiser. However, the primary
goal for the fraternity is to help jump-start the careers of its members.
"The most important thing for business
students to know about the organization is that we will help you to prepare
for the real world," Rajapaksa said. "We are experts in networking. We
will get you ready for interviews, and by the time you’ve gotten well involved
with us, you would be more than comfortable to speak to a prospective employer."
He said the fraternity prides itself with
giving back to the community and CSULB.
"Our members are members for life," Rajapaksa
said. "After a fraternity member leaves the college of business, they often
give back in different ways."
The CBA's Alumni Chapter is a strong one,
Ragapaska said. Alumni assist students with finding valuable internships
and careers at major U.S. corporations. |
