The 49er women's soccer team suffered another
heartbreaking one-goal loss Sunday, when the team lost in overtime (1-0)
to the Cal State Northridge Matadors.
Last week, the 49ers lost in double overtime
to the San Diego Aztecs (3-2). The No. 13 ranked Aztecs scored the final
goal with less than five minutes left in the second overtime.
This time the misfortune hit with less
than eight minutes left in overtime on a goal that was scored off a slow
rolling pass.
"I wasn't pleased with the overall play
of the team," said Julie Cochran, LBSU women's soccer head coach. "We played
up for San Diego State and down for Northridge and it doesnÍt make
any sense."
Sunday's game was scoreless during 90 minutes
of regulation time. However, the Matadors' offense never gave up. Middle
forward Kerrie Clavadetscher, scored the winning goal on an assist by teammate
Paige Andrews.
The Matadors' defense was effective in
turning over possession of the ball.
The Matadors outshot the 49ers, 15-8, and
had more corner kicks, 7-4.
Long Beach State freshman goalie Jihan
Elgazzar had two saves but the Matador goalkeepers, Jenny Willemse and
Tawni Takagi, came up with five.
"Jihan played extremely well against Northridge,"
Cochran said. "At this point, Jihan has won the starting [goalie] position."
Injured 49er goalie Hannah Cochrun is scheduled
to have the cast removed from her wrist Wednesday, Cochran said. The injury
was suffered off the field a few weeks before the season.
The 49ers' offensive attack was left in
the dust, due to the absence of midfielder Jennifer Reott. She sat out
the game after receiving two yellow cards in last week's game against the
San Diego State Aztecs, which caused her to be suspended for Sundayís game.
But Cochran made no excuses.
"Player personnel had nothing to do with
it," Cochran said. "We lost because the other team outplayed us."
The LBSU offense could not score and its
defense could not stop the final goal from being scored.
Last season, the 49ers women's soccer team
played in three overtime games. They managed to win all of them.
The 49ers will return to George Allen Field
Friday, hosting the Loyola Marymount Lions at 3 p.m.
