Friday Night Reggae Club gives good vibes

By Elyse Medlin

For those who need to mellow out after a hectic week in school, the Friday Night Reggae Club in the Seaport Marina Hotel offers live bands and disc jockeys until 2 a.m.

The dimly lit club is a cozy, unpretentious hangout with spacious, comfortable booths. A large dance floor in front of the stage was packed Friday night, despite the holiday weekend.

Carol Johanson, 26, has been going to the Reggae Club since it moved from the Golden Sails Hotel last May.

"There's such a good vibe here," Johanson said. "Everybody just comes to dance and chill."

Local Jamaican band Bamiki Bandula played Friday night.

Countless originals and well-known covers such as "Knockin' on Heavenís Door" and "Why Must I be a Teenager in Love?" were on the bandís play list. A live DJ kept the island vibe in between sets with the best of current reggae.

Michelle Malner, 24, of Long Beach visited the club for the first time on Friday. ěThere arenít many reggae clubs around here," Malner said. "The band's really good and the club's small, more intimate."

Higher Lion will be featured this Friday at the club. Bamiki Bandula will return Sept. 17 and again on the 24th.

Live music begins at 9:30 on Friday nights and lasts until 2 a.m. The club is 21 and over.
