President pitches reading program
Dear students,
Each fall at Convocation, I share with
faculty and staff the titles of books I have read during the summer that
I recommended for their reading pleasure.
My friend, Dr. Jack Munsee, professor of
physics, has suggested that I do the same with students.
Now, here is the idea. You read one or
more of the recommended books, if you have not already done so, and when
you return from semester break we will form small groups to discuss what
you have read.
Here is the list of books I have enjoyed
reading over the past several months.
1. "Walking with the Wind"
by John Lewis (memoir of the Civil Rights Movement).
2. "Lindbergh" by A. Scott Berg (Pulitzer
Prize winning biography of famous pilot Charles Lindbergh).
3. "Kissinger Transcripts" edited
by William Burr (top secret talks with Beijing and Moscow).
4. "The Loop" by Nicholas Evans (fiction:
set in present-day Montana, story centers on controversy over reintroduction
of wolves back into the American West.
5. "Harry potter and the Sorcerer's
Stone" by J.K. Rowing (fiction: New York Times bestseller about neglected
boy who proves his worth while attending Hogwart's School for Wizards and
Witches).
6. "The Professor and the Madame"
(story of W.C. Minor, Civil War veteran who contributed more than 10,000
words to the Oxford English Dictionary).
If you are interested in being part of such
a discussion group, e-mail me at rmaxson@csulb.edu and let me know which
book or books you are going to read.
