Beating out 37 colleges, the Cal State
Long Beach speech and debate team took first place over the weekend in
this fall's Pacific South West Collegiate Forensics Association regional
competition held on campus.
The team was considered the best of the
tournament for winning 35 awards, more than any other university in the
contest, Taylor said.
"We are very happy and very proud of having
taken first place in this fall's regional speech and debate competition,"
said Matthew Taylor, director of forensics and CSULB communication studies
lecturer.
Coming in second place overall was Azusa
Pacific University, with Point Loma Nazarene University picking up third.
The CSULB debate team has been preparing
for 15 weeks for this tournament, Taylor said.
"This has meant a lot to me," team member
Nathan Elson said. "Three years of hard work has finally paid off."
Elson and teammate Steve Picchione together
won first place in the senior parlimentary debate category, which features
two people a team.
"There are many preliminary rounds before
you actually make it to the final," Elson said.
In the final round, CSULB's team beat Point
Loma Nazarene University.
"I feel marvelous about winning this fall's
PSCFA's regional speech and debate competition," said Kevin Johnson, a
CSULB graduate student. |
