New traffic light may be needed on campus

A traffic light signal may be installed
at a problematic intersection on campus where many drivers and pedestrians
do not follow traffic laws, Cal State Long Beach officials said.
The intersection of Deukmejian Way and
State University Drive has been the scene of several accidents during the
past semester. University officials are now considering taking some action
to prevent further incidents.
"More than 50 percent of people don't use
the crosswalk," said Shirjeel Muhammad, a researcher from the Kaku Association,
which conducts traffic and transportation planning. "Between the peak hours
of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., a lot of people are jaywalking."
Tom Bass, director of CSULB Parking and
Transportation Services, contacted the association and requested it conduct
research on campus to determine how traffic can be improved.
"We are only a third party that provides
suggestions for modifications," said Jasper Domingo, a Kaku associate.
"We provide professional advice for parking and traffic."
Muhammad counted the number of people that
crossed the intersection between peak hours last week. He determined that
a flashing red light might be necessary to make passing cars aware of the
stop signs and to prevent drivers from injuring people crossing the streets.
"It is a busy intersection, and it's kind
of offset," said Michelle Woodward, an alumna who passes through the intersection
every day. "I haven't seen any cars running the stops or squeezing on their
breaks."
This intersection is one of the key spots
on campus that needed to be studied since it is close to classrooms, the
Foundation Building and a parking lot, officials said.
Ignacio Carrillo, associate director for
parking services, said a stoplight might be necessary at this location.
An official decision on stoplight placement
is expected in two months when engineers are done studying the area, Muhammad
said. |
