Local youngsters jumped and played in thirty
tons of snow that covered Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach on Sunday during
the Snow in Bixby Knolls Arts and Crafts Fair.
The snow, which was dumped on a stretch
of the avenue, was an unusual sight for Southern California residents.
Army ROTC volunteers assisted enthusiastic
children as they slid down mounds of the packed snow on plastic sleds.
Dozens of children raced through the slushy
water as they hurled snowballs at one another.
"I got my brother right in the face," said
11-year-old Darnell Williams, after getting into a snowball fight.
With the temperature reaching the mid-70s
on Sunday, the snow soon turned to slush.
"That big wet spot in the middle of the
road is what used to be snow," said Keith Seward, a Long Beach Police Department
officer who coordinates the local neighborhood watch program.
The LBPD and the Long Beach Fire Department
were also on hand to promote a toy and canned food drive that will run
until Dec. 20.
A free train ride gave children a special
thrill as it wove its way through the arts and crafts booths.
The booths sold holiday candy, seasoned
popcorn, hand-made toys, crafts and festive artwork.
A special guest appearance from Santa Claus
at 1 p.m. not only delighted children who visited but also gave parents
the opportunity to snap pictures of them sitting on Santa's lap.
The Long Beach Business Journal and other
local businesses presented a live performance from the band Brethren Bluegrass
Gospel.
A special performance from a band consisting
of LBPD officers also played songs written by popular artists such as Van
Morrison and the Kinks. |
