Winners of Swiss Web contest to be announced

The Cal State Long Beach Odyssey program and the Consulate General of Switzerland have joined forces to sponsor an online competition designed to teach computer users all about Switzerland.

CSULB's Odyssey program symbolizes an intellectual voyage of discovery and adventure by offering yearlong series of on-campus lectures, presentations and exhibits.

Through this contest, organizers hope participants will experience a cross-cultural exchange via the Internet.

The competition, which ran from Aug. 30 to Dec. 1, was open to individuals between the ages of 18 and 26.

Participants were able to enter the contest when they accessed the Swiss consulate's Web site and answered 15 questions about Switzerland, said Claudia Durgnat, a competition organizer.

Topics included technology, economy, geography, food, music, the arts and tourism of the country, Durgnat said.

Six participants who submitted all the correct answers were randomly selected as contest winners.

Although their names will not be announced until Monday, Durgant said two CSULB students are the winners.

The first prize is a package that includes two Swissair tickets to Switzerland, public transportation travel passes in the country, and a tour around The European Particle Physics laboratory in Geneva, according to an Odyssey Project press release.

The second prize is a Swiss-made watch. Other prizes include products from well-known Swiss companies such as a travel bag that includes Swiss Army Brand items and a gift basket from Nestle, a Swiss chocolate manufacturer.

"This is the first project for virtual journey series through foreign countries," Durgnat said.

Durgnat said about 50 people out of 2600 participants passed the quiz. She said most participants were CSULB students.

"I learned a lot about Switzerland while visiting the site," said Lisa Sragovicz, a CSULB student.

Sragovicz said she had to check other web sites to answer the questions, and it took her more than 30 minutes to finish 15 questions.
