Men's basketball appears uninspired in tourney losses

The 49ers hoped to show teams from the West could compete by winning at least one game against Eastern competition in a four team tournament at Syracuse, NY.

Instead, they lost both games over the weekend and looked lifeless in the later of the two in being down by as many as 27 points in a 73-62 to Richmond and 79-76 loss Saturday against St. Joseph's.

In their two games the 49ers were out rebounded 86-65 and shot 33.6 percent from the field as a team in the Carrier Dome.

In addition they shot under 30 percent from behind the 3-point line.

The 49ers first loss was a hard fought one to St. Joseph's, which saw six ties and seven lead changes.

LBSU fell behind by as many as ten points in the first half before battling back.

Led by Ramel Lloyd, who scored 18 of his game high 25 points in the first half, he hit a 3-point shot as time expired to give LBSU a one-point lead at halftime.

The game became a 3-point shooting contest as St. Josephs hit 12 of 25 attempts and 49ers hit nine of 24.

In fact, during a 45-second span in the first half, four 3-point shots were made on consecutive possessions.

However, the game tightened throughout the entire second half with both teams taking leads of five points.

LBSU tied the game with 4:28 remaining on a pair of free-throw shots by D'Cean Bryant. But then the Hawks were able to jump to a seven point lead over the next minute, which all but let the air out of the 49ers shots.

In the consolation game of the tournament, LBSU jumped out to an early 11-6 lead, against the Spiders then were never heard from again.

Richmond was able to keep the 49ers off the offensive and defensive boards and took over the game.

The Spiders blew through the 49ers defense with a 19-6 run and simply had their way with them by extending their lead to 27 points in route to a 73-62 win.

The 49ers shot a dismal 22 for 73 from the field going four for 20 from the 3-point line.
