Long Beach State forward Kesha Wade exploded
for 22 points, five rebounds and four assists in the 49ers' victory over
Virginia Commonwealth at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Hawaii.
LBSU center Rhonda Smith also contributed
16 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks for the team, which won 69-63
and finished in seventh place at the tournament.
The 49ers (2-2) didn't fare so well in
two other Thanksgiving weekend games at the annual Honolulu tournament.
Friday morning's game against the University
of Texas was a blowout loss, as the women fell 75-44 to the nationally
ranked Longhorns. However, Texas failed to contain Smith, who scored 23
points and had 16 rebounds and five blocks.
Smith's stellar performance proved to be
too little as four Texas players scored in double figures, including Tracy
Cook, who had 13 points, five rebounds and six steals.
In Saturday night's game against Grambling
State, the women lost 79-74 despite the Lady Tigers' 27 percent field goal
percentage and poor passing.
LBSU outrebounded Grambling 56-45, had
more assists (21-8) and shot nearly 20 percent better, but still lost.
In the Grambling game, Smith led the 49ers
with 21 points, five blocks and seven rebounds.
Forward Kesha Wade added 13 points and
10 rebounds, while guard Crystal Givens had 12 rebounds.
The women's record now stands at a .500
winning percentage on the season.
The 49ers next play Sunday, when they face
off against Oregon State for a 2 p.m. game at The Pyramid. |
