Despite the March 2 priority application
deadline for Cal grants and loans, Gloria Kapp, director of the Cal State
Long Beach office of Financial Aid, suggested students apply early.
"We encourage students to apply early,
just so they have time to process the applications and get a response,"
Kapp said, adding that students generally receive information six weeks
after application.
"A student can apply anytime and, as long
as funding is available, possibly receive a loan," Kapp said.
Several options are available to students
needing financial assistance for the coming semesters at the financial
aid office in Brotman Hall.
There are three types of basic financial
aid: loans, work study and grants, she said.
Loans must be paid back with interest.
Work-study programs let students work to earn the money to pay back the
loan, and grants never have to be paid back.
Kapp said that there are two main grants,
the federal Pell grant and the state-funded Cal grant.
In the federal work-study program, students
literally work for the money they receive, Kapp said.
Among other public interest and nonprofit
private organizations where work-study arrangements are set up, students
can work at the school they attend.
"It's really work," Kapp said.
Most student loans do not exceed 9 percent
interest.
However, all rates are variable, according
to the office's Financial Aid Guide. Loans are legally protected from going
over a certain percentage rate.
Interest rates are down from previous years
and usually 7 percent is the average rate for a student loan, Kapp said.
Kapp said all applications go through a
check system which, when completed, is electronically sent to the CSULB
financial aid office for review.
If they are satisfied all questions were
answered properly, they begin the process of figuring out how much money
each applicant should be awarded.
Students are eligible for certain amounts
depending on class standing and what they apply for. For more information,
one may call the office at (562) 985-4641. |
