For students looking to jump start a career
in teaching, Cal State Long Beach's office of Educational Career Services
can help.
"Educational Career Services is an information
source," said Judi Walker, the office's director.
"Where else could you find such an abundance
of services for educators all in one place?"
The center houses information about school
districts, including salary schedules and employment opportunities.
It produces a weekly job bulletin and job
hotline that list current vacancies in school districts and community colleges
throughout the state.
Walker offers resume reviews, mock job
interviews and interviewing skills and career counseling.
Assistance is available through workshops
or on a one-on-one basis.
For students who are just starting out
and might be interested in the field of education, Walker recommends using
the center's resources early. It is never too soon to explore options in
jobs.
The center has listings for tutoring, teacher's
aids, substitute teaching and counseling fieldwork opportunities.
"I went to the [career services] office
and they had binders on tutoring jobs in the area.
I needed a part-time job and [the center]
made it easy to find something that would also give me experience with
kids," said junior Kate Hong.
The center also has listings of Web sites
related to education and job opportunities.
Each semester the center sponsors an education
job fair where students and alumni can meet representatives from over 70
school districts throughout the country.
"Without the job fair, it would be very
difficult for students to get in touch with so many school districts,"
Walker said.
"We provide opportunities for students
to make personal contacts with potential employers."
If you are interested in opportunities
abroad, the center collaborates with the study abroad office to inform
students of teaching opportunities in other countries.
Students can teach English in a foreign
country without having prior teaching experience or training.
The center suggests utilizing their placement
file services. Placement files are kept in the center office and contain
information relevant to potential employers.
A student can start a placement file after
18 units in a credential or graduate program, and can have the file sent
out to districts they are applying to.

Career Services at (562) 985-5772 or visit the center in ED1-67. |
