Surf makes you ill
Could the waters around Huntington Beach still be toxic?
That is the claim being made by some local surfers.
They claim bacteria that closed the beach in August and September is
still present in the water and is responsible for making them ill.
All surfers have the same symptoms, ranging from a runny nose and sore
throat to sinus and ear infections.
The beaches were closed during the summer months because dangerous levels
of bacteria were found in the surf.
City officials reopened the beaches just in time for the Labor Day weekend,
in spite of concern that the water was not safe.
There was suspicion that city officials rushed to reopen the beach so
the merchants in the area would make some profits.
In fact, just days before the reopening, health inspectors could not
find the source of the contamination.
Then, all of a sudden, the beach opened for the holiday weekend.
That is possible but not likely. City officials are not likely to put
a few merchants concerns before the welfare of an entire city.
It is getting colder, and the cold and flu season is in full swing.
It is more likely that they are getting some nasty viral infection from
other people.
There is not an easy way to prove either side of the argument, though.
No one can tell who is right or wrong, but it might be wise to find
a new set to surf.
That way there won't be any question when the surfers fall ill. |
