For a majority of the first 35 minutes the Long Beach State men's basketball
team was in control of the game against Southern Illinois. The last
five minutes put the game in doubt.
Surviving a furious rally, the 49ers (2-1) were able to hang on for
a one point victory over the Salukis (1-2), 78-77 in front of 1,764 at
The Pyramid.
LBSU led by as many as 13 points and with 5:27 left to play in the game
the 49ers held a ten-point lead.
Then, within the next 40 seconds the Salukis hit two 3-point baskets
in quick succession to cut the lead to four points.
Down the stretch the 49ers made one basket and went six for 12 from
the free-throw line, missing their last four attempts.
"They never gave up," said 49ers Head Coach Wayne Morgan.
"We were fortunate to hang on and win at the end."
After a timeout with 23 seconds left the 49ers were leading 78-77.
Both teams failed to score and with less than seven seconds to play
an inbound pass to Saluki Jermaine Dearman went right through his hands
and landed in those of 49er Charles O'Neal, who was immediately fouled
and sent to the free-throw line.
However, both his attempts missed and the Salukis raced down court to
have Chris Thunell attempt a final shot that failed to score. |
