In a rousing see-saw battle Saturday night, Long Beach State defeated No. 23 ranked USC (12-15, 15-13, 13-15, 15-10, 15-7) and finished the LBSU volleyball tournament with three wins.

The Trojans gave the 49ersí defense problems, as points were traded early in the match.

Game one saw the score tied several times at 5-5, 10-10 and 12-12. A controversial call of too many hits on LBSU at 12-13 changed the momentum.

Freshman setter Brittany Hochevar recorded five digs for game one.

"I was very proud of her," LBSU Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro said. "She's further ahead in three weeks than any freshman setter I've ever seen."

The 49ers overcame a 10-13 deficit in game two to win 15-13. Senior Kristy Kierulff finished out the game with a kill. Kierulff also had two serving aces for the match.

The score was tied six times in game three as the Trojans rallied.

Despite being injured late in the game, sophomore setter Keri Nishimoto returned to assist her teammates. Nishimoto finished the match with five defensive digs.

USC took an early lead in game four, but the 49ers scored eleven consecutive points to ensure the win. LBSU closed out the game with a service ace by sophomore middle blocker Cheryl Weaver.

She received a standing ovation from 2,706 attending fans after a spike that pushed the 49ers to a 12-4 lead.

"Cheryl in that fifth game rose above," Gimmillaro said. "She was just frightening."   Weaver ended the match with a career-high 15 kills and nine digs.

Sophomore Tayyiba Haneef pounded down a career-high 21 kills for the match and hit an impressive .415 percent.

"I tried to bring all the energy I had into the match," Haneef said.

On Friday, LBSU easily defeated University of Massachusetts. Long Beach State's Veronica Walls tallied nine kills and Kierulff had eight kills and eight digs for the match.

Also on Friday, the 49ers lost the second game of match two against University of North Carolina Friday night, breaking a 92 home-game winning streak.

The last time the 49ers lost a home game was Nov. 4, 1997, against UC Santa Barbara. LBSU rallied back to win games three and four (15-8, 10-15, 15-8, 15-8).

"We can play good at times and bad at times," Gimmillaro said. "It's part of the reality, part of the development."

Barratt ended game four against North Carolina with a powerful kill for a total of 14 for the match. Teammate Haneef hit .414, with a team-high 15 kills.

Senior outside hitter Anja Grabovac had four serving aces and 16 digs, despite her injured knee. Although Grabovac is hurting, she still wants to play, Gimmillaro said.

Grabovac plans on competing in the match tonight at San Diego State.

"If my knee feels like it does right now, I'll play," Grabovac said after the match against USC.

The game begins at 7 p.m. at the Aztec Bowl on the campus of San Diego State.

The 49ers' next home game will be this Friday against Cal State Northridge at 7:30 p.m. in The Pyramid.
